You Can’t Get Married Without a Marriage License!

Before you say “I do,” you’ll need a valid marriage license—it’s the one legal requirement for your wedding. In fact, all that’s truly needed for a legal marriage is a signed marriage license and a simple “I do.”

Residency & Citizenship Requirements

Marriage license applicants do not need to be Washington State residents.
✔ A marriage license obtained in any Washington county is valid statewide.
Applicants do not need to apply for a license in the county where the wedding will take place—any county-issued license is valid across the state.
✔ A Washington State marriage license cannot be used in another state or country.
Applicants are not required to have a U.S. Social Security number. However, one of the required forms includes a field for a Social Security number or a signature stating that the applicant does not have one. This does not affect the ability to receive a marriage license.

Note: I am an appointed Notary Public, but I do not issue marriage licenses. Licenses must be obtained through your county clerk’s office.
